Here’s how you can perform a seamless Mac OS upgrade on your 2015 to 2020 MacBook Pro or iMac.

The most important thing to consider before you plan on a Mac OS upgrade is the reason that you are looking to upgrade? Is it the new features that Mac OS Sonoma has when you are video conferencing in FaceTime or Zoom? Maybe the way that Mac OS Ventura lets you schedule outgoing email messages is attractive? How about the cool way that Mac OS Monterey lets you copy text from images and paste it into Word or Apple Mail? Maybe it’s time for a Mac OS Upgrade!

If one of these reasons inspires you to take make the jump, the most important thing to know is which Mac OS Upgrade is going to work. Furthermore, this is a list from Apple of every Mac that will run either Mac OS Sonoma, Mac OS Ventura or Mac OS Monterey. Remember if your machine is one of the last listed under one of these Mac OS compatibility lists, I’d suggest staying with the previously compatible Mac OS. Of course if you live in the Westlake Village area, give me a call and I can take you through the steps.

For example: If you Mac is a 13 inch 2018 MacBook Pro, you probably would want to stay in Mac OS Ventura, since that is the last stable version of the previous operating system.

Do you know know the exact year and model of your Mac?

  • Go to the grey apple in the left hand corner of your screen and select “About This Mac”
  • Click on the “System Report” button
  • Look for the “Model Identifier” and copy that. In this example: “MacBookPro13,3”
  • Go to Apple’s Identify your MacBook Pro model page
  • Hold “Command” and “F”
  • Paste your Model Identifier in and hit enter
  • The exact year and date of release of your Mac will be highlighted. Armed with that knowledge you can use this list to find out which Mac OS is compatible with your Mac
