Should I go buy a new Apple Mac M2 or M3 MacBook Air or find the fastest of an era of Macs in a lightly used Apple MacBook Pro 2015?
On the surface this sounds like a no brainer, right? Of course the newer and faster machines would be the way to go.
The answer is:
It all depends on what you are looking to do with your Mac. 🙂
If you do what 99.9999% of other people do:
- Surf the web
- Look at your Mac Mail email
- Watch YouTube videos
Then the choice isn’t as clear.
Here were my two choices:
- Mid 2015 MacBook Pro (like new) $300
- 2023 MacBook Air M2 15” $1200
I really liked the speed, reliability, regular USB and HDMI ports and keyboard of my 2015 MacBook Pro AND I could upgrade the hard drive to a 2 TB easily for $200 any time I wanted.
Thinking that I’d have to trade all of that in for the mythical speed of the new Mac M1, M2 or M3 chips.
I found this article on reddit comparing the exact two machines in question:
My take away on this is that the speed isn’t really that different for the average user.
So, I now am happily typing on “new-to-me” 2015 MacBook Pro and enjoying its old school clackety-clack keyboard!
Please let me know what you’ve discovered in your new/old Mac!
